Decaf coffee has a bit of a reputation. Some people love it. Others act like ordering it is a personal insult to coffee. But if you enjoy coffee and want less caffeine, decaf makes perfect sense.
What is decaf coffee?
Decaf is ordinary coffee that's had most of its caffeine removed, generally before roasting. It retains much of its flavour while containing significantly less caffeine.
Is decaf caffeine-free?
No. Decaf normally contains a small amount of caffeine. The amount depends on the beans, process, serving size and brewing. If you must avoid caffeine entirely for medical reasons, don't assume decaf contains none.
How is caffeine removed?
Decaffeination generally happens to green, unroasted beans.
Water-based methods: use water and filtration to separate caffeine while aiming to preserve flavour; Swiss Water is one example.
Carbon dioxide: pressurised CO₂ can extract caffeine from beans.
Solvent-based methods: controlled processes may use ethyl acetate or methylene chloride; applicable food-safety rules govern residues. Different methods have different costs and characteristics.
Does decaf taste different?
It can. Decaffeination may affect some flavour compounds, but bean quality and roasting still matter. Good decaf can be rich, balanced and enjoyable. You shouldn't have to settle for something that tastes like somebody rinsed out a mug.
Is decaf healthier?
It can be useful if you want to reduce caffeine, especially if caffeine affects your sleep or causes unwanted symptoms. But it isn't automatically healthier for everyone. Follow medical advice if you've been told to restrict caffeine.
Can you use decaf in a normal coffee machine?
Yes. Decaf can be used for espresso, cafetière, filter and many other methods. Choose a grind suited to your equipment.
Does decaf work with milk?
Absolutely. You can make decaf lattes, cappuccinos, flat whites or an ordinary coffee with milk. Decaf describes caffeine content, not a different kind of drink.
